Vatenfall Installs DanTysk Substation

first_imgYesterday Vatenfall reached another milestone – the Offshore Substation (OSS) at DanTysk is installed completely, now basking in the sun. After a construction period of around two years, the DanTysk OSS left the Hollandia Shipyard in Krimpen, The Netherlands, on the 23rd of July. The OSS was built in two sections. After the successful installation of the jacket we are now proudly announcing the finalisation of the DanTysk OSS.The last step was the installation of the platform. Covering an area of 36 x 44 m² this massiv topside was a 3200 tonnes lift. Now the entire structure is installed 50 meters in the seabed, standing in 26 meters of water, allowing for an air gap of 20 meters to the bottom of the topside and an additional 14 meters to the helicopter deck. This job can only be done by few vessels in the world, one of them being the Oleg Strashnov, a heavy lift crane vessel. The Oleg Strashnov has picked up the OSS on a barge and arrived on construction site on the 25th of July.During the entire installation the weather was nice for offshore standards causing only little delay of the installation work. After the jacket installation and some preparatory work on the foundation the topside was lifted yesterday. The Oleg Strashnov was capable of lifting and properly placing the substation on its final resting place. That was indeed the most facinating crane lift of the offshore project DanTysk. The process lasted less than one week and involved nearly 200 skilled professionals. The OSS is without a doubt one of the largest, single technical component within the DanTysk wind farm. Now we are looking into hooking-up the OSS completely. A team of dedicated engineers will power-up all components. In the future during operation the OSS will be transforming the electricity that is generated by all 80 wind turbines from 33 kV into 155 kV (AC). Connected to the converter station Sylwin1 the electricity will be transported to land via a 165 kilometre subsea cable.Press Release, August 05, 2013last_img read more

Magic circle steps up social mobility efforts

first_imgMagic circle firms are among top international practices that are stepping up their bid to promote social diversity in the profession, it was announced today.Allen & Overy, Clifford Chance, Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, Linklaters and Slaughter and May, along with Norton Rose Fulbright, Macfarlanes and Travers Smith, have signed up to a contextual recruitment tool that monitors and analyses social mobility. The system is believed to be the first graduate recruitment tool that helps firms to calibrate and quantitatively measure the social mobility characteristics of individuals. For instance, firms will be able to assess a candidate’s academic performance against the overall performance of their school.Baker & McKenzie and Hogan Lovells announced in May they planned to fully integrate the system in time for the 2015/16 graduate recruitment season. The following month Ashurst and Herbert Smith Freehills announced their intention to use the system.    The system, developed by graduate diversity recruitment company Rare, will depend on two databases – one of all 3,500 secondary schools and sixth-form colleges in England, and all their exam results since 2007; and one of 2.5 million UK postcodes. The information, along with responses to other questions, will produce real-time contextual information on all candidates.Linklaters graduate recruitment partner Simon Branigan said the use of contextual data would ensure the firm had ‘as complete a picture as possible’ to identify top talent when it is recruiting.‘In selecting some of the brightest minds in the market, we do of course look at academic achievement, but we also deeply value impressive non-academic achievements,’ Branigan said. The announcement comes after research published this week shows more than two-thirds of employees in the legal sector have unconscious racial bias.According to business support charity Business in the Community, 67.8% of employees in the UK legal sector have unconscious racial bias compared with 66.4% in the US and 68.7% in Europe.Business in the Community said the findings did not imply the sector was racist but unconscious bias ‘may influence decision-making in recruitment and progression’.last_img read more

Rhein-Ruhr-Express EMU car rolled out

first_imgGERMANY: Siemens unveiled the first Desiro HC car for the future Rhein-Ruhr-Express network at its Krefeld factory on March 31. ‘The RRX will lift regional transport in NRW to a higher level’, said NRW Transport Minister Michael Groschek on his visit to Krefeld, adding that ‘the new trains combine comfort, capacity and performance.’ Siemens is supplying 82 Desiro HC electric multiple-units under a €1·7bn contract signed in March 2015. Testing of the new trains is expected to begin in mid-2018, with entry into service from December that year. Each set will have two single-deck driving cars and two double-deck intermediate vehicles; most RRX routes will be operated by two sets in multiple. The planned service pattern would see a train every 15 min on the core route between Köln and Dortmund, going out to other main cities including Leverkusen, Düsseldorf, Duisburg, Bochum and Bielefeld. The trains are to be tested at Siemens’ Wegberg track, and Siemens will maintain them for 32 years at a depot that it is building in Dortmund.last_img read more
