Podcast: Human nature observed, and naked mole rats may break aging rules

first_imgTim Evanson/Flickr (CC BY-SA 2.0) David Grimm—online news editor for Science—talks with Sarah Crespi about the chance a naked mole rat could die at any one moment. Surprisingly, the probability a naked mole rat will die does not go up as it gets older. Researchers are looking at the biology of these fascinating animals for clues to their seeming lack of aging.Sarah also interviews freelancer Douglas Starr about his feature story on the Dunedin Multidisciplinary Health and Development Study—a comprehensive study of the lives of all the babies born in 1 year in a New Zealand hospital. Starr talks about the many insights that have come out of this work—including new understandings of criminality, drug addiction, and mental illness—and the research to be done in the future as the 1000-person cohort begins to enter its fifth decade.Listen to previous podcasts.[Image: Tim Evanson/Flickr/CC BY-SA 2.0; Music: Jeffrey Cook]last_img read more

India vs South Africa, 5th ODI: Rohit Sharma back in form with maiden hundred in South Africa

first_imgRohit Sharma, who was in the middle of a rare poor run, smashed his maiden century in South Africa as India looked set for a competitive total in the fifth ODI at Port Elizabeth on Tuesday. It was his 17th hundred in ODIs overall.India, who lead the six-match series 3-1, are looking for their first ever bilateral series triumph in South Africa.WATCHRohit was dropped for the third and final Test against South Africa in Johannesburg after scores of 11, 10, 10 and 47. He was expected to fare better in the ODIs but managed only 20, 15, 0 and 5 in the four ODIs of the series – several experts questioned his technique in alien conditions. However, Rohit, India’s vice-captain in limited-overs cricket, bounced back in style after South Africa put the visitors in at St George’s Park.Rohit and his opening partner Shikhar Dhawan got off to a watchful start before the latter started taking the attack to South Africa’s new-ball bowlers.Rohit, who was troubled by Kagiso Rabada right through the tour, hit the pacer for a massive six. India lost Dhawan soon after but Rohit was relentless in his aggressive approach. In fact, so dominating was Rohit that the in-form Kohli had to take the backseat. The two added 105 for the second wicket before a terrible mix-up resulted in Kohli’s run-out.However, Rohit dug deep and scored a well-deserved hundred to lift India in their pursuit of history.last_img read more

David Warner was coached to avoid specific questions, says body language expert

first_imgDavid Warner held a press conference on Saturday over his involvement in the ball-tampering scandal but ducked most of the questions thrown at him by the journalists and left most unsatisfied. While Steve Smith and Cameron Bancroft had spoken to the media day before yesterday immediately after landing in Sydney and Perth, respectively, Warner had sought some time to take care of his family before addressing the media.Having been identified as the chief conspirator in the ball-tampering scandal in Cape Town Test that led to widespread outrage, Warner was expected to answer some tough questions. Warner apologised to the Australian public but broke down and lost his voice for a moment as he talked about his family.WATCH DAVID WARNER’S EMOTIONAL APOLOGY”I want to apologise to my family, especially my wife and daughters [cries]. Your love means more than anything to me and I would not be anything without you. I am sorry for putting you through this and I promise I won’t put you in this position again,” Warner said in the press conference.Though social media was not impressed, Warner’s “hard face, pained eyes and outward breaths” showed that he was remorseful, according to speech and body language expert Michael Kelly. Also read – Major takeaways from emotional David Warner press conference”You could see his body was unanimated; it was almost like he’d taken a punch. It shows this is taking a huge toll on him,” Kelly told the Sunday Morning Herald.”He was almost losing emotional control, his voice started breaking when he spoke about his family and the effect it has had on them, but it also happened again when he started speaking about his future, long-term career,” he said.advertisementWarner at the press conference said he hoped and prayed that he be bestowed with an opportunity to play for Australia once again but was aware that it may not happen again.”It is hard to know what lies ahead but for now, it is all about the well-being of my family. There’s a tiny ray of hope that I may one day be given the privilege of playing for my country again but I’m resigned to the fact that it may never happen.”Also read – Warner breaks down and apologises to wife and daughtersKelly said that the fact the he mentioned his concern over not playing for Australia again, shows how much he cares for his cricketing future.”I think his greatest interest is his self interest,” he said. “He said at least three times that he might not be able to play for Australia again and it really hurt him.”Warner was bombed with questions about who else might be party to the crime, but the opener shut out the queries by deflecting the blame his way, over and over again. Also read – Warner resigned to the fact he may never play for Australia againAfter the press interaction, Warner took to Twitter to acknowledge that there was “unanswered questions and lots of them” suggesting he was just complying with the “process”.He said that there was too much at stake for his family, but promised that he would “answer all questions in the proper place and at the proper time”.1/3 I know there are unanswered questions and lots of them. Sebastian Prödl: ‘Brazil are purring but Germany need more puff’

first_img Facebook We defended well in the opening period but in fairness their goal had been coming. Once they were ahead they became even more secure and confident. With Philippe Coutinho in midfield they had great mobility and it felt like they always had an extra player in key areas.Neymar was extremely motivated, wanting to prove he can have a huge impact on the tournament, and the whole team performed as if they wanted to lay down a marker, to produce a performance good enough not just to win the game but also to intimidate World Cup opponents. When they made changes in the second half they brought on Fernandinho and Roberto Firmino, outstanding players and stars in the Premier League. As we started to tire, the gap between the teams got wider. Philippe Coutinho scores for Brazil against Austria. Photograph: Leonhard Foeger/Reuters Pinterest Brazil’s attacking players always get the attention but they are definitely benefiting from having a very strong defence. As soon as they lose the ball, the whole team defend. That leaves their opponents with smaller gaps on the counterattack, less time on the ball and a reduced chance of success. They have a very strong team capable of playing very good football when they have possession and also defending very well when they lose it. Reuse this content World Cup Fiver: sign up and get our daily football email Share on LinkedIn Twitter Topics To succeed against them you need to stop them playing. Press them high, close them down relentlessly and be very physical. If you attack their technical players, they don’t like it. Use all the dark arts to unsettle them – the accidental stamp on a foot or little kick to the legs. Be totally committed in the tackle. Brazil’s opponents will need to produce a very intense game, a very physical game, and when they win the ball they need to keep it, otherwise they will struggle.I’ve seen them in perfect condition, and I’ve felt how hard it is to play against them. Brazil are going to be the team to beat this summer. Share on Twitter Read more Read more Share on Pinterest Share on WhatsApp Belgium have the squad, Spain the swagger – but who will win in Russia? The Observer Germany Share on Messenger World Cup 2018 World Cup features Avoid complacency and Germany should be kings of the world again They started well and scored after a defensive mistake but then we woke up, started to press high up the pitch, and the game changed completely. We repeatedly won possession in their half, won a lot of battles, and then had success on the counterattack. We created many chances and should have scored more goals, and we were fit enough to keep up the pressure for 90 minutes. Germany should have been fitter in my opinion. They were heading for a tournament and we were heading for a holiday, so it was strange we were fitter and stronger.Joachim Löw was experimenting a bit with his players – it was just before he named his 23-man squad – but on the pitch they weren’t holding back. Everyone wanted to perform otherwise they might have been dropped from the squad. But there’s no doubt Austria were the better side. Later that week we watched on television as they beat Saudi Arabia 2-1 in another poor performance. One thing they have in their favour is that they are the reigning champions and they are always contenders, so they will go into the tournament with a lot of belief. They are capable of playing smart, confident football, with the relationship between Toni Kroos and Sami Khedira in central midfield particularly important.I think a lot depends on the fitness of a handful of key players, including Jérôme Boateng, Thomas Müller and Marco Reus. With them, they are capable of having another great tournament. Beyond them the quality seriously declines and while a lot of their squad have potential they are not yet ready to compete at the highest level.Brazil came into their game against us wanting to prove they are the No 1 contenders at the World Cup and they were seriously impressive. They were confident on the ball, very fit and had massive pace on the counterattack. We dealt with it quite well in the first half, when the one goal we conceded should have been disallowed for offside but in the second half we saw the difference between a world-class team and us, on the next level, trying hard to compete. Germany and Brazil go into the World Cup as joint favourites and having played both over successive weekends I was able to take a close look at their preparations. What I saw was two teams at very different stages in their development. We beat Germany 2-1 in a game that will be remembered for the return of Manuel Neuer from his long injury. His ability to play in the World Cup was in doubt, and in Germany there was great concern about the prospect of going into the tournament without him, but those worries vanished in the space of 90 minutes. He was their best player and their only real positive from the game. Thomas Hitzlsperger Share on Facebook Share via Email Brazil Austrialast_img read more

13 Secrets of Holiday Fundraising Online

first_imgIf you’re a procrastinator and are only just revving up your online fundraising, don’t worry. The best is yet to come! Most people do their online giving at the end of December, so you still have time for success.I’d like to point you to the Procrastinator’s Guide to Year-End Fundraising by Sea Change Strategies and Care2. You should definitely read the whole thing, but in the meantime, here are their ten steps to better online fundraising, PLUS my own three additions. What I love about the list from Sea Change is that it doesn’t just tell you how to get a gift – it shows you how to keep the donor in a lasting relationship with you.1. Inspire your donors. Re-connect them with the passion and vision that inspired them to give in the first place.2. Blaze trails to your donate page. Make it easy for donors to give by making it easy to find your site and your Donate button.3. Optimize your donate form. Make it short, simple, easy, safe and inspiring.4. Test drive your online donation process. Sit down a few friends and watch them try to give. Learn. Fix problems.5. Create a “Why Donate” page that makes a case for why someone should care – and explains what happens when someone gives. Endorsements and ratings are good.6. Thank your donor at least three times – when they complete a donation, when they get your email receipt and when they get your full thank-you via email a few days later.7. Provide a warm welcome – an orientation email is a nice idea!8. Launch a cultivation plan. Re-inspire your donors monthly and listen to waht they say. Build a relationship through conversation, not appeals.9. Measure and test throughout the year.10. Avoid procrastinating next year! Have a plan. (Yeah, right.)Katya’s three bonus tips:Last night, I asked a group of folks in the MarketingProfs Book Club a question: When is the last time you gave? The answers revealed three important themes to include in your fundraising thinking:1. People want vivid examples of how their donations will be used. So if your audience has given before, tell them all the great things they’ve done – then all the wonderful additional things more support will bring. As one MarketingProf member pointed out, “I give money regularly to groups where I have been able to see what they accomplish. I’m not impressed by marketing appeals, what interests me is being able to see the impact in action.”2. Emotion motivates. People are more inclined to give if the cause is local or if they know the person asking for help. This holiday, ask some of your biggest supporters to invite their friends and family to support you. The passion they feel for your cause is incredibly compelling to their circles of influence. Bloggers may be a good target. Says one MarketingProf member: “One of the things that I enjoy about blogging is that as the readership and influence of my blog grows, I have a greater ability to help promote ideas and causes. I’ve noticed that many of the blogs I read also make a point to promote their favorite causes and charities from time to time. This of course costs us nothing, but I think it greatly benefits charities and causes, many of which aren’t very social-media savvy.”3. Trust is sacred. Be honest and transparent about your programs, your spending, your impact — everything. As SeaChange advises, show exactly where the money goes and what the donor’s investment will do. And then report back on that investment, again and again.last_img read more

Infographic: Shipping Industry Needs to Raise CSR Awareness

first_imgzoom The shipping industry needs to increase Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) awareness as on average less than 50 percent of the industry fully commits to related activities, according to the Shipping CSR500 Survey report released by SAFETY4SEA.Conducted in the first quarter of 2016, the Shipping CSR500 Survey examined 15 sectors and 10 factors chosen in accordance with ISO 26000 requirements and EU CSR strategy. The survey was initially conducted in a total of 1,867 shipping related companies, 500 of which were chosen to provide a representative sample of the industry composition. The survey found that the five top rated sectors are oil companies, LNG operators, drilling companies, tanker operators and container operators, while bulk carrier operators, associations, ports and P&I Clubs were identified as underperforming sectors.“Industry needs to understand the importance of CSR reporting. Taking into account that shipping is responsible for the transportation of the 90% of world trade, companies need to develop sustainable business and build trust by communicating and supporting cooperation to motivate stakeholders to become more active in CSR,” the survey states.“The survey identifies critical areas that must be addressed to chart the path to success with respect to CSR implementation. While positive developments have been witnessed in many sectors, industry as a whole has not realized Corporate Social Responsibility importance. Significant challenges lie ahead to preserve people, planet, profit while shipping which plays a critical role in driving world trade, needs to fully embed CSR in all its activities,” Apostolos Belokas, Managing Editor, SAFETY4SEA said.The CSR500 Survey infographic below depicts key findings of the report which also includes data, industry and sector focus, materiality matrix analysis, Shipping Industry Perspectives and CSR best practices.Infographic Courtesy: SAFETY4SEAlast_img read more

Province Students Partner to Prevent Sexual Assaults on Campus

first_imgThe province is partnering with Nova Scotia Student Unions to better protect university students from sexual assault and the consequences of overdrinking on campus. Student leaders from across the province are coming together to review student union policies and practices for alcohol and sexual assault prevention. The goal is to find out what is working and what can be done to better keep students safe on campus. “Fall is an exciting time of year for university students, unfortunately it can also be a dangerous time,” said Frank Corbett, Minister of Labour and Advanced Education. “There are lots of parties and activities, and the temptation can be to drink too much. This can put kids in a tough spot. “This is why we are working with young people on campuses to increase prevention and raise awareness.” The students will also use the review to develop a communications campaign to raise awareness about sexual assault, how to prevent it from happening and what to do if someone witnesses an assault. “We’re very excited to pursue these important initiatives to improve our practices and protect our students,” said StudentsNS chair Jared Perry. “Together, students and the province are working to turn the tide on sexual assault and alcohol abuse among students.” Student Unions at Acadia, Mount Saint Vincent, St. FX and Cape Breton University are all taking part. Saint Mary’s University and Dalhousie Agriculture’s Students’ Association are also involved. Dalhousie Student Union will participate in the communications campaign. Almost $47,000 will be spent on the initiatives. The province is investing more than $31,000, with $13,000 from student unions, and $1,400 from Cape Breton University.last_img read more

Singers Perform Spectacular Chants From 3 Religions for King Mohammed VI,…

Rabat – Morocco’s Philharmonic Orchestra prepared a special performance to celebrate Pope Francis’ visit in Morocco at the request of King Mohammed VI.During the spiritual moment, three people representing the three Abrahamic religions stood in front of King Mohammed VI and Pope Francis to perform religious songs from Muslim, Christian, and Hebrew traditions. The performance began with the sound of double bass and the Islamic call to prayer (addhan) performed by the muezzin Smahi El Hadni, who wore a green Djellaba and a white cape. Wearing a fabulous green caftan, French singer Francois Atlan chanted the Jewish prayer known as Adonai, followed by El Hadni.Read Also: King Mohammed VI and Pope Francis Sign ‘Al-Quds Call’The soprano singer, who is also the daughter of orchestra chief Jean-Claude Casadesus, Carlone Casesus joined the theater to chant Caccini’s motet Ave Maria. The performance amazed the crowd, who attended the ceremony held at the Mohammed VI Institute for the Training of Imams, Morchidines and Morchidates (Islamic counselors).King Mohammed VI was accompanied by the Crown Prince Moulay El Hassan and  his brother Prince Moulay Rachid.During the reception, the King and his guest watched an film  made by the institue on its goals, missions, and various achievements. The Minister of Islamic Affairs Ahmed Toufiq also gave a speech before the two leaders, emphasizing that  King Mohammed VI has put in place reforms and introduced a dynamic of concordance between the modern institutional frameworks and the purposes of religion in different aspects.During the ceremony, two students from the Mohammed VI institute shared their experiences in the institution.Aboubakr Hmaidouch, a French student of North African origin, pointed out that the Muslim community in France is in great need of imams and preachers. The values of religion, he said, contribute to living together and to spiritual well-being in society. After the terrorist attacks that struck France in 2015, Hamaidouch said he felt the need to “acquire knowledge and communication skills” to be effective in a “society shaped by multiple currents and sometimes by ready-made ideas. “The papal visit is part of a landmark trip to emphasize the importance of coexistence between the Abrahamic religions. Both King Mohammed VI and Pope Francis delivered speeches on the importance of inter-religious dialogue and coexistence. In his speech, King Mohammd VI said that he is keen to “ensure freedom to practice the religions of the Book and I am the guarantor of that freedom.”He added “I protect Moroccan Jews as well as Christians from other countries, who are living in Morocco.” read more

Abandoned Darfur villages burned to terrorize refugees from returning – UN

The United Nations refugee agency today voiced alarm that abandoned villages in Sudan’s conflict-ravaged Darfur region are once again being burned as a message of terror to discourage people who once lived there from returning home.“This gratuitous act is clearly a message to the former residents not to return home,” UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) spokesperson Jennifer Pagonis told a news briefing in Geneva of an agency visit last week to the village of Seraf, near Masteri, some 60 kilometres south of El Geneina, capital of West Darfur state.“We are concerned because acts like this – on top of the displacement of some 2 million people from their homes – threaten to change the social and demographic structure of Darfur irrevocably,” she added.Ibrahim, a resident of Seraf, took UNHCR staff for an on-site inspection of the village, which he said had been burned to the ground four days earlier by men he called Arabs or Janjaweed militias.“They are telling us not to come back to our original village,” Ibrahim told agency staffers. “They want to push us to go to Chad, out of the country. They want to stay here instead of us.”Some 200,000 Sudanese have fled across the border into Chad, beyond the more than more than 1.8 million displaced inside Darfur by the conflict, which began two years ago when rebels took up arms partly in protest at the distribution of economic resources but has since been compounded by Janjaweed and other armed attacks on villages.“It is a dramatic way of making the point they (the original inhabitants) are not welcome here,” said a UNHCR staffer, who accompanied Ibrahim. Last year during Ramadan, the Islamic holy month from October to November, some 55 abandoned villages were burned around Masteri, an agglomeration of nearly 100 villages.Actions like these also demonstrate the value of UNHCR’s mobile protection teams, which have conducted more than 100 missions within West Darfur to find and arrange protection for the most vulnerable people, especially women who have been raped, Ms. Pagonis said.“We are working to improve life for those who do choose to go home to selected areas, although we do not want to send the signal that it is now safe for all Darfuris to return home,” she added. Some 20,000 people have already taken the brave step of going back to their villages from Chad and from larger towns in Darfur. On a more positive note, the UN World Food Programme (WFP) announced today that thanks to a rapid donor response, it will not be forced to carry out expected ration cuts in May for close to 2 million people living in Darfur. Three weeks ago it had warned of impending ration cuts due to a lack of funds which remains a concern.WFP had planned to halve the non-cereals part of the daily ration but the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Food for Peace has stepped in and redirected to Sudan some 14,000 tons of non-cereals already on the high seas.”We are extremely appreciative of the urgent efforts made by the United States to prevent ration cuts at such a critical period,” WFP Country Director Ramiro Lopes da Silva said. Even before this new donation, the United States contributed 60 per cent of the food and 50 per cent of cash towards WFP’s emergency operation. But the agency warned that despite this stop-gap measure, the overall emergency operation in Darfur still remains severely under-funded. Of the $467 million WFP needs, only $281 million has been received, leaving a 40 per cent shortfall. Adding to the difficulties is the recently increased estimate of people requiring food aid. WFP contingency planning projects a worst-case scenario of 3.5 million people in need during the leanest months of July and August, of which WFP will target 3.25 million. read more

Already overstretched aid agencies in Somalia need more resources to tackle severe

“Drought in Puntland and Somaliland has deepened and spread to southern and central regions of the country […] the situation has become increasingly desperate for vulnerable families in need,” he told a briefing with the international community in Nairobi, highlighting the urgency of responding to the drought situation in Somalia.Describing the situation as “extremely worrying” and one that could deteriorate rapidly without a stepped-up response, Mr. de Clercq, added that humanitarian organizations are in urgent need of additional resources to tackle the drought situation and help the country cope with other crises. Against this backdrop, he noted that the 2016 Humanitarian Response Plan has received just 47 per cent of the total $885 million request, with only four weeks left in the year. The UN Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reports that families and communities, especially in the north, are already facing below average rainfall and many of them are adopting desperate measures to survive. Even the current ‘Deyr’ rainy season so far has been poor across most parts of Somalia, potentially resulting in significant crop and pasture losses. Further, more than 40 per cent of the country’s population, nearly five million people, does not have sufficient food, with more than one million of that number in a state of crisis and emergency. More than 50,000 children are severely malnourished, and 320,000 under the age of five are acutely malnourished, making all those children most vulnerable during the current drought. Several appeals for humanitarian assistance were issued to deal with the drought and highlight the urgency of the situation, including an appeal made by the President of Somalia on 12 November, and several ones issued by state authorities in Jubbaland, Puntland, Somaliland, and Galmudug. Moreover, increased displacement related to conflict is another issue in the region. The withdrawal of international troops presented additional humanitarian challenges, as nearly 5,000 people have been displaced in Hiraan and Bakool regions, and another 29,000 in Lower Shabelle. read more

Real ID Kentucky licenses hit another setback

The federally required cards started rolling out in a pilot program over the summer in Franklin and Woodford counties and the state said they’d be available for everyone by the end of the year. But that might not be the case.“I would just like to see them get it done,” says Rob Stevenson who travels often for work.Stevenson knows for all his work travel he’ll need an updated ID by October 2020.He thought he’d be able to get one soon because the state started offering them this summer. But that’s been put on hold. The state says it overestimated the workload for staff in circuit clerk offices.“If they don’t get it done and get it out then how am I going to be able to travel in and out and if they don’t get it done then I think my only other choice is to get a passport which would be kind of costly,” Stevenson says. This isn’t the first time Kentucky has had a problem getting the IDs up to new federal standards. The state didn’t want to comply at first when congress decided in 2005 everyone would need a more secure ID, after 9/11 terrorist attacks. After several extensions, we’re getting close to the new October 2020 deadline. After that, those without the new ID won’t be able to fly from state to state or visit military bases. Now, some are concerned the state won’t even be able to meet that deadline. We were there this summer when the Franklin County Circuit Clerk office started giving out the IDs.People told us they were waiting in line for over two hours. But the clerk’s office said then it was just because it was new. Now, the state says it was too much work so the transportation cabinet is hoping to set up regional offices just dedicated to issuing the licenses.“Not everybody has time and can take time off to go do something like this,” says Stevenson. The cabinet believes this is the fastest and most efficient path going forward but it hasn’t given details yet.Stevenson says he’s just waiting to find out what he needs to do next. For more information on the new IDs, click here. LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) — A new setback will impact almost every Kentuckian.Wednesday, the state put a hold on delivering new IDs you’ll need if you want to drive, travel, or go on a military base.- Advertisement – read more

Pay to county employees scrutinized

first_imgBrowse our public-employee salary database at: http://www.columbian.com/datacenterLate WSUV chancellor topped 2011 public salariesScheduling vacations wasn’t a priority when Sonya Langsdorf was hired in 2008 by Clark County District Court judges to be a court commissioner.“I was just concentrating on trying to do a good job and make a name for myself,” recalled Langsdorf. Court commissioners, who earn less money than judges but have nearly all of the same powers, have their own dockets and serve as a back-up for judges.“You have speedy-trial issues … you can’t just leave your work on your desk and come back to it,” she said. “Somebody has got to it.”So she didn’t take many vacation days. Then Langsdorf was elected to replace a retiring judge. She took office in January 2011, and elected county officials are exempt from the county’s vacation policy. So per county policy Langsdorf was paid for her unused vacation hours that she’d accrued over 15 years, 13 of which were spent as a deputy prosecuting attorney. The $26,143 payout for 382 hours boosted Langsdorf to among the top 20 highest-paid public employees in 2011, as ranked in The Columbian’s fourth annual survey (see chart and accompanying story). The payout also highlights an area where the approximately 1,600 people who work for Clark County government — the fourth-largest employer in the county, behind PeaceHealth Southwest, Vancouver Public Schools and Evergreen Public Schools — have an advantage. A new county study found that most county leave policies are comparable to other public and private employers, but there are exceptions — including the fact county employees may accrue and bank more vacation and sick leave.last_img read more
